At Homestead Correctional Institution, a women’s prison located in southern Florida, United States, a bird with unusual characteristics was sighted. The animal had thick legs and a curved beak, in addition to displaying plumage that combined shades of aquamarine, teal, and dark blue.
Besides the vibrant colors, the bird had elongated feathers on its head, resembling antennas. As it walked through the area, the sound of claws against the ground caught the observers’ attention, highlighting the bird’s presence in the prison environment.
An onlooker identified the animal as a peacock chick, based on the body colors and described features. Thus, the bird captured the interest of inmates and staff for its grandeur and peculiarity in the prison context.
Author’s experience context in prison
The author spent two years in a central Florida prison that had an incentivized program for inmates. Despite expectations, this program did not provide the enhanced opportunities that had been announced. However, the institution offered some amenities, such as a room equipped with video games, including Xbox and PlayStation, for the prisoners.
Homestead Correctional Institution, where the author served part of the sentence, stood out due to the presence of natural elements uncommon to the typical prison environment. The surrounding area featured diverse vegetation and local wildlife, including birds and turtles. A nearby lake was also part of the setting, contributing to a distinct atmosphere.
Upon arriving at Homestead, the author reported an initial feeling of welcome generated by the sounds of nature and the presence of greenery around. This experience contrasted with the typical rigidity of prison units, offering a connection with the external environment and natural aspects, even within the institution’s limitations.
This particularity of Homestead provides an important context to understand the author’s experience, highlighting the importance of the environment in the inmates’ routine. Still, the real benefits of the incentivized program remained limited, not matching the initial promises made to the prisoners.
